Flagship project · Ekofisk

A mature giant with new directions to explore.

Ekofisk is the focus of our current integrated field study and proposed new-well concept. All field context is gathered here as one project story—from location and geology to recovery strategy and opportunity.

Southern Norwegian North Sea

Ekofisk lies in block 2/4, around 320 km southwest of Stavanger, in approximately 70 metres of water.

Field at a glance

Discovered in 1969 and brought into production in 1971, Ekofisk became the first producing field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. It remains a landmark in offshore development and enhanced recovery.

Why Ekofisk matters

  • 01Energy history. Ekofisk opened a new era for Norway as the first field to produce on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
  • 02Recovery innovation. Large-scale water injection transformed an initial recovery expectation of 17% into an estimated final recovery above 50%.
  • 03Mature-field opportunity. Continued infill drilling, intervention, and improved targeting are essential to identify remaining oil pockets.
  • 04Connected infrastructure. Processing and export systems link the field to gas markets in Germany and oil markets through Teesside in the UK.

Reservoir & development logic

The productive intervals are naturally fractured chalk in the Late Cretaceous Tor Formation and early Paleocene Ekofisk Formation. High porosity, low permeability, water injection, and chalk compaction shape the field’s production behavior.

Future plan

A new well for Ekofisk.

Our next step is to develop an integrated concept for a new infill well. The objective is to reach remaining hydrocarbons while managing mature-field uncertainty, drilling risk, produced-water challenges, and project economics.
